Throughout the prohibition era, alcohol was illegally consumed at secret bars and clubs. Much of this drinking took place at speakeasies. These venues were often located within other restaurants, off of alleyways, and in any location undetectable to the public eye. Entry to these establishments would be a doorway usually requiring a spoken password.
There is a trend today to create the same speakeasy “secret” entryway from a kitchen into an area that is used as a pantry. This concealed or tucked away door, with no indication of another room, is reminiscent of the days when a crowd entered a smoke-filled illegal establishment to drink alcohol.
If you’re not looking for it, you wouldn’t know there is a room behind that cabinet door. The “speakeasy pantry door” opens you up to a world of storage beyond a standard cabinet. And you don’t need a password to gain access.
