Most kitchen cabinet doors are comprised of five pieces of wood, MDF, or a combination of both. The framing of the door is four pieces. The center panel is another piece and even that is sometimes made up of multiple pieces. All these parts expand and contract based on the moisture that is absorbed or released. When painted, the stress cracks are inevitable where the door components are adjoined as paint is a rigid finish with no movement.

For painted cabinet doors, MDF is a superior product. The acronym MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. The product is made up of recycled wood particles and wood fibers bonded by resin and formed into flat panels. Unlike solid wood, MDF does not contract and expand as a result of heat or humidity.
